12/13/04 Tokyo Gas to lease fuel cell power system for home "will start leasing the world's first commercial fuel cell system for household use on Feb. 8. The system, developed jointly with Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and Ebara Corp. affiliate Ebara Ballard Corp., will be available only for leasing for the first three years. . . The environment-friendly system will be offered on a 10-year contract at a total charge of 1 million yen [US$9,537] . . . targets signing contracts for just 200 units in fiscal 2005 . . . Savings from lower gas and electricity usage are not expected to fully offset the leasing charge, but Tokyo Gas believes that environment-conscious people will be willing to shoulder the shortfall, which is estimated to run to about 40,000 yen a year. The company hopes to start outright sales of home-use fuel cell systems in fiscal 2008 for around 500,000 yen. It is forecasting sales of 5,000 units in fiscal 2008 and 10,000 units in fiscal 2009. . . the 500,000 yen target still seems far away, considering that the system's current price is estimated at nearly 10 million yen. This high price is believed to be the reason why Tokyo Gas has decided to initially offer the system only through leasing contracts. Durability is another area that needs improving because tests have yet to prove operability beyond three years. Home-use fuel cell systems must be able to operate for at least 40,000 hours, or about 10 years, Matsushita President Kunio Nakamura said at a Dec. 6 press conference announcing the move." Nikkei

12/7/04 ANALYSIS: Home-Use Fuel Cell Technology Still Faces Hurdles "higher overall energy efficiency will help reduce electricity and gas charges. Based on Tokyo Gas' target price of 500,000 yen for a home-use fuel cell system in fiscal 2008 or later, households will be able to recover their initial investments after eight years if the system can cut power bills by 60,000 yen a year . . . However, the 500,000 yen price target still seems far away, considering that the system's current price is estimated at nearly 10 million yen. This high price is believed to be the reason why Tokyo Gas has decided to initially offer the system only through leasing contracts. Durability is seen as an another area that needs improving because tests have yet to prove the system's operability beyond three years." Nikkkei
