4/28/05 EDITORIAL:
Fuel Cells Start Entering Homes "At the moment, the only
units available for home power generation are [PEM fuel cells]
that generate power at a conversion efficiency of 31%, which is
much lower than the figure for typical thermal power generation.
Since the excess heat can be used to make hot water for homes,
the overall efficiency can be as high as 70%. . . The biggest
problem with fuel cells is price. The currently available system
costs some 8 million yen [US$75,500]. Without the 6-million-yen
government subsidy per unit, few homes would use the system. For
fuel cells to be widely used, costs must be slashed. There are
also some technological challenges that must be tackled before
usage spreads, including increasing the useful life of the cells."

oil production will peak, forecasts presented by USGS geologist
Les Magoon, the Oil and Gas Journal, and others expect the peak
will occur between 2003 and 2020. What is notable ... is that
none extend beyond the year 2020, suggesting that the world may
be facing shortfalls much sooner than expected." The

Quiz for GM Bob Lutz's Comments Are an About-Face On the Importance
of Hybrid Vehicles "Lutz's responses indicate that GM has
done an intellectual 180 on the issue of hybrid gas-electric vehicles.
Not long ago, GM executives expressed little enthusiasm for hybrid
vehicles, and pooh-poohed the Toyota Prius as a money loser that
made little contribution to saving fuel and distracted the industry
from efforts to build cars powered by hydrogen fuel cells. . .
GM recently announced efforts to mass-produce hybrid gas-electric
